How can I do the "gunshot wound" hair spikes properly?

I want to start spiking my hair around the back in the "gunshot wound" style, basically the "emo" way of spiking your hair up high at the back. I'm a guy, I have layered hair that's longish at the back, long enough so it's hard to spike anyway. Can someone tell me the most effective method of spiking here?
The best products, tools, hairspray, way of doing etc.
